Day one: the old centre on foot
Start on King Milan Square (7 minutes from the apartments), with the Liberators of Niš monument, then cross the Nišava into Niš Fortress – an 18th-century Ottoman fortress built on Roman foundations, with the Istanbul Gate, a mosque turned gallery and shady parkland. Have lunch in Kazandžijsko Sokače, the old craftsmen's lane, and try pljeskavica, ćevapi and burek.
Day two: emperors and a tower of skulls
Take a short taxi ride to Mediana, the remains of a luxurious Roman imperial villa from Constantine's time, with beautiful floor mosaics. On the way back stop at Ćele Kula, the Skull Tower – a sobering monument from the 1809 uprising and one of the most unusual sights in Europe. Nearby is the Red Cross concentration camp memorial, one of the best-preserved WWII camps in Europe.
Day three: out of town
Spend a morning at Niška Banja, a spa town with thermal springs 20 minutes away, or drive to the Sićevo Gorge, a dramatic canyon on the road towards Bulgaria with great viewpoints and hiking.
